Finally, new Kinect for Windows is coming! In CES(Consumer Electronics Show) Keynote 2012 today, Steve Ballmer announced that the Kinect for Windows will be official on 1st Feb, 2012.

Company: Instagram

Why it's innovative: The photos-sharing app has created a Twitter-like stream for images; it's catching on like wildfire.

Instagram reached 10 million downloads in half the time of Foursquare, which has a much larger staff and a lot more venture capital.

Greplin is a search bar for you and your social network

Company: Greplin

Founder: Daniel Gross and Robby Walker

Location: San Francisco, CA

Funding: ~ $5 million

Why it's innovative: Greplin first launched as a Google killer and has morphed into another form of search entirely.

Dropbox is a file storage and sharing solution

Why it's innovative: You might not believe that files will exist in the future, but there's no denying that Dropbox is innovative.

It created a way to easily share and store files all over the web and it's now worth $4 billion.

MoviePass is an all you can eat movie ticket solution. Pay $30 and see as many as you want per month in theaters.

Company: MoviePass

Founders: Stacy Spikes and Hamet Watts

Location: New York, NY

Funding: Raising a round now and is backed by AOL Ventures, True Ventures, Lambert Media, Moxie Pictures, Brian Lee, Diego Berdakin, MJ Eng, Ryan Steelberg and Adam Lilling.

Why it's innovative: MoviePass lets users attend all of the movies they want in theaters for a fixed price. It's great for theaters, which have been having trouble getting people in seats.  It also collects data on movie goers.

If MoviePass takes off, it could cast aside sites like Fandango and become an entirely new way for movie buffs to purchase tickets.

TaskRabbit is creating an on-demand workforce. It creates jobs and supplemental income.

Funding: Recently raised $5 million.

Why it's innovative: TaskRabbit has a lot of momentum and is creating an on-demand workforce. It creates jobs and supplemental income.

Much like teenagers babysit in their free time, people can run errands in their free time and get paid.

ABC Nightly News called TaskRabbit a solution for America's job crisis.

Kaggle is a network of 17,000 PhD-level people that help each other solve impossible problems

Company: Kaggle

Founders: Anthony Goldbloom

Location: San Francisco, CA

Funding: $11 million Series A from Index Ventures, Khosla Ventures, SV Angel, and others

Why it's innovative: NASA, Delloite, and The University of Michigan have all turned to Kaggle's pool of 17,000 PhD-level scientists to solve complex problems and create winning models.

It uses the collective knowledge of some of the world's smartest people to make vast improvements in the world, from AIDs research to mapping dark matter in outer space.

구글이 또 한 건 했네요.

이건 구글을 자주 사용하면서 저도 예전에 잠깐씩 생각했었는데, 역시나 구글이 세상에 내 놓았네요. 구글 Suggestion으로 타이핑만 하면 추천단어들이 나오는 기능이 있었습니다. 예를 들어, d만 타이핑 해도 dictionary라는 추천단어가 맨 위에 나오고 다른 단어들도 리스트에 나오는 거죠. 그 중에서 가장 위에 나오는 단어를 자동으로 검색해도 괜찮겠다라는 생각을 했었는데, 그렇게 되면 단어를 타이핑 할때마다 검색을 해야 하고, 느려질 수도 있어서 별로 안 좋을수도 있겠구나 하고 말았는데... 어떻게 잘 구현했는지도 몰라도 엄청난 속도로 자동 검색을 할 수 있게 구글이 구현을 했네요. 바로 "구글 인스턴트"!

말이 필요없습니다. 한번 가서 사용해 보세요.  d를 타이핑 하면 바로 dictionary로 검색을 해 주고, 가장 위에 www.dictionary.com을 보여주네요.  구글 정말 항상 열심히 하네요. 다음은 구글 에서 공식적으로 발표한 구글 인스턴트 소개 영상입니다.

공식 페이지는 http://www.google.com/instant 입니다. 역시니 심플을 강조하는 구글, 페이지가 그리 길지 않으니 한번씩 가서 보시는 것도 좋을 것 같습니다.

구글 인스턴트로는 1. 더 빨라진 검색 2. 더 똑똑해진 검색어 추천 기능 3. 결과를 바로 알수 있음. 이런 세 가지를 얻을 수 있다고 하네요.

마이크로소프트의 행보가 참 아쉽네요. 오늘 엔가젯 뉴스에서 Microsoft KIN is dead ( http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/30/microsoft-kin-is-dead/ ) 라는 기사를 보았습니다.

미국에서 발매되었던 KIN1과 KIN2를 올해 하반기에 유럽에서도 발매할 예정이었는데, 발매를 취소하고 더이상 KIN을 만들지 않겠다고 발표를 했습니다. 대신 Windows Phone 7에 더 역량을 집중한다고 합니다. Windows Phone 7도 소비자의 외면을 받는다면, 마이크로소프트의 모바일 시장에서의 입지가 아주 위험할 것 같습니다. 다음은 마이크로소프트의 공식 발표입니다.

"We have made the decision to focus exclusively on Windows Phone 7 and we will not ship KIN in Europe this fall as planned. Additionally, we are integrating our KIN team with the Windows Phone 7 team, incorporating valuable ideas and technologies from KIN into future Windows Phone releases. We will continue to work with Verizon in the U.S. to sell current KIN phones."

애플의 iPhone 4와 구글의 안드로이드 사이에서, 어떤 플랫폼과 폰이 나올지 마이크로소프트의 Windows Phone 7을 기대해봅니다.

마이크로소프트가 심혈을 기울이고 있다는 Natal Project가 드디어 모습을 드러낼 것 같습니다. Natal Project가 무엇인지 모르신다고요? 말이 필요 없습니다, 다음 유튜브 영상을 보시죠. ^^

이 영상은 작년 2009년 E3에서 마이크로소프트가 Project Natal을 소개한 영상이네요. 그 동안 구체적인 언급이 없었는데, 의도적인 것인지 아닌지는 모르겠지만, 사우디 마이크로소프트의 E&D 마켓팅 매니저인 Syed Bilal Tariq가 사우디 텔레비전과의 인터뷰 중에 Project Natal이 오는 2010년 10월에는 전세계 팬들을 찾아갈 것이고 더 자세한 소식들은 6월에 열리는 2010 E3에서 발표할 것이라고 했다고 합니다. 원문과 동영상은 http://www.gamertagradio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13934에서 확인하세요.

이런 모습으로 나올지는 모르겠지만, 본체도 멋있네요. 

오늘은 Microsoft Office 2010이 발표될 예정이고, 10월에는 Project Natal 그리고 연말에는 Windows Phone... 마이크로소프트의 앞으로의 행보가 너무 궁금하네요. 이렇게 바빠서 관심있게 지켜본 태블릿 프로젝트인 쿠리오를 포기한 것인지도...ㅠ.ㅠ 과연 어떤 모습으로 나올지 기대가 되네요. ^^

흔히 말하는 M&A (Merger AND Acquisitions: 인수 합병)를 통한 성장... 사실 한국에서는 M&A라는 용어 자체가 긍정적이지는 않았다. 뭔가 남의 것을 먹는 듯한 느낌??? 그러나 해외에서는 M&A를 아주 긍정적으로 생각하고, 시너지 효과를 기대하는 것 같다. 오늘도 이름만 들어도 알만한 큰 두 기업이 다른 기업을 인수했다는 뉴스를 접했다. 서로 Win-Win 할 수 있는 기회가 되기를...

1. IBM Advances Cloud Initiatives With Acquisition of Cast Iron Systems

Cast Iron Systems라는 회사는 클라우드 컴퓨팅을 전문으로 하는 회사로, 금융, 멀티미디어, 엔터테인먼트 등의 분야에서 클라우드 컴퓨팅을 연동하는 프로젝트를 많이 했다. 당연히 IBM은 클라우드 서비스 확장을 위해서 Cast Iron Systems를 인수했다. 개인적으로 2010년에 가장 핵심이 될만한 단어로 클라우드 컴퓨팅(Cloud Computing)을 꼽고 싶다. 마이크로소프트에서도 클라우드 컴퓨팅에 아주 많은 관심을 가지고 있는데, 다음에 기회가 될 때 다시 한번 언급하도록 하겠다.

2. Google Acquires BumpTop

구글은 3D 인터페이스 분야에 전문성을 가진 회사인 BumpTop을 인수했다. 아마도 iPhone과 iPad를 의식해서, 안드로이드 기반의 스마트폰이나 태블릿 PC 같은 분야에 3D를 적용하기 위해서라는 의견이 지배적이다. 시장을 지배하고 있는 iPhone과 iPad가 아직 선보이지 못한 3D 인터페이스 분야를 먼저 선점하기 위한 포석일 것이다. 어떤 제품이 나올지 기대가 된다.
